Frequently Asked Questions
Approximately 90 horsepower is the minimum recommended to operate the Grizzly Single Tine Ripper effectively. For maximum working depth in tight soil conditions, a tractor of up to 150 horsepower may be required. However the Grizzly Single Tine ripper has been manufactured for serious commercial operators and Grizzly recommend up to 400hp can be used in front of this ripper.
The Grizzly Single Tine Ripper uses a Category 3 or Category 4 quick hitch. It can also be connected to a Category 2 tractor using the provided mounting provisions, although it will not operate as a Category 2 quick-hitch attachment.
No additional front weights or ballast are generally required for penetration. The machine’s weight helps it enter the soil, while its curved shank design helps draw the tine deeper and maintain working depth through hard ground.
The Grizzly single tine can work up to 600mm deep. The working depth depends on soil conditions, tractor horsepower and the job being performed. The ripper is designed for deep ripping and root pruning, with its curved tine helping it penetrate and maintain depth through compacted soil. Confirm the suitable working depth for your conditions with Grizzly.
The Grizzly Single Tine Ripper can generally cut through tree roots approximately 100 mm thick and potentially larger. Results depend on the tree species, root age, working depth and operating speed. Its curved, parabolic tine lifts and shears roots rather than relying on a blunt cutting force making it extremely effective at getting results.
The ripper can be used along paddock perimeters and around tree islands within paddocks. The practical distance from the tree line depends on tractor access, root location and the desired root-pruning line.
Root pruning is designed to manage lateral root growth rather than damage the tree. It may encourage roots to grow deeper instead of spreading horizontally. Results depend on the tree species, root system and pruning conditions.
Summer is generally recommended for root pruning because it allows farmers to work around paddock perimeters without driving over standing crops. The best timing will depend on farm conditions, soil moisture and the intended application.
Root pruning may need to be repeated every two to three years, depending on the tree species, root regrowth rate and conditions on your farm. Monitor regrowth to determine the appropriate interval.
The recommended operating speed is approximately 5–8 km/h. Speeds of 8–10 km/h may be possible in suitable conditions, but higher speeds can increase wear on the point and chin guard.
The tine disturbs approximately 50 mm of soil directly around the shank, with soil shattering extending approximately 250 mm on either side. This produces an overall disturbance zone of around 500 mm, depending on soil conditions.
Dry soil is generally preferred for effective soil shattering. The ripper may also suit perimeter root pruning in somewhat wetter conditions. It can handle some alluvial stones, but large ironstone formations may cause difficulties and increase shear-pin breakages.
Yes. The Single Tine Ripper can be used for root pruning, perimeter ripping and deep ripping in open paddocks. It’s common for farmers to trial deep ripping to assess soil improvement and return on investment before deciding whether a larger multi-tine ripper is more suitable.
Hard-facing grit is generally recommended as a cost-effective upgrade for improved wear resistance. Tungsten tile points may suit clean country where wear resistance is a priority, but they can fracture more easily in rocky conditions. The best option depends on soil type, stone content and expected wear.
The Grizzly Single Tine Ripper is manufactured at Grizzly’s factory in Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia. 12-month warranty covering materials.
Yes, Grizzly have designed a machine that is perfect for planting trees for shelter belts and profiting from carbon credit incentives. This includes the single tine ripper connected to the 16 plate Linkage Heavy tandem offset disc with an option to include the crumble roller.
Grizzly: the fastest way to prep land for trees. The single-tine ripper splits the hard pan so roots go deep. The 16 Linkage Heavy breaks up clods around each seedling for solid root-to-soil contact. The crumble roller finishes the job, leaving a fine, even seedbed.
